Nina is a disenfranchised and alienated young twenty-something living aimlessly in Berlin. As the title suggests, the film takes place in a day of her life, characterized by this “series of encounters.” This indecisive girl, unsure of where to turn, either meets or seeks out various people during her day. Aside from a bit of connective tissue (brief moments before/after an encounter, short individual reflections, and in less common cases, a quick shot-reverse shot at the moment of the initial clash), the film devotes one shot to each of these encounters. In this succession of elongated confinements of characters within cinematic cages, there is a dramatic extension of a downward failure. Balancing between a dry, distressing, and nervous humor, and a real, spine-tingling distress and nervousness, the film manages to map, in a surgical way, the life of a girl, or rather, that of a very specific demographic and generational intersection, in an equally acerbic and, in the end, warm manner.
