Pay Off

소설 「임꺽정」이 크게 성공하면서 출판사 관계자와 북에 있는 작가의 유족들이 저작권 문제를 해결하기 위해 만난다. 그 남·북 왕래는 걱정과 환대의 마음과 함께 정치, 경제, 문화, 각종 영역이 응축된 또 하나의 소설 같은 이야기가 된다.

<김군>(2018)을 만든 강상우 감독이 40주년을 맞은 사계절 출판사의 의뢰를 받아 벽초 홍명희의 소설 『임꺽정』의 스토리를 훑어간 단편 다큐멘터리이다. 이 기념비적 소설이 기획되어 기대하지 않았던 방식으로 스테디 셀러가 되고, 북에 있는 작가의 유족들과 저작권 문제를 해결하기 위해 왕래하는 과정이 수록되어 있다. 저작자의 승인을 얻지 않은 도용에 대한 우려와 달리 북에 있는 유족들의 반응이 동포애를 느낄만한 것이었다는 사실이 영화의 주제를 모두 말해주진 않는다. 예컨대 강상우는 남의 출판사 관계자들과 북의 유족들이 만나고 협의하는 과정을 소설책 『임꺽정』의 물성(책의 표지와 내지 이미지)과 나란히 놓고, 기계적인 사운드 몽타주를 덧붙여 상상적으로 기술한다.<페이 오프>는 미처 ‘갚지(pay off)’ 못한 저작권료를 매개로 하여 해결되지 않은 채 표랑하는 정치, 비즈니스, 문화적 관계를 이야기한다. This monumental novel was conceived and developed to become a steady seller in an unexpected way, and the process of traveling to and from the author＇s bereaved family in the North to resolve copyright issues. The fact that the reaction of the bereaved in the North was comradely, contrary to concerns about theft without the author＇s permission, does not tell the whole story of the film.
