Shawn Bath, a 49-year-old diver, used to make a living collecting sea urchins in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The things he saw on the ocean floor started bothering him. So, one day, instead of removing more sea urchins from the ocean, he started fishing out old tyres, car batteries and other junk. Through decades of commercial fishing and tourism, Atlantic harbours have become trash receptacles. “I’ve seen everything that mankind didn’t want,” Bath says. So far he has removed almost 7 tonnes of garbage single-handedly. A camera followed him over a year and a half of struggle, for instance to obtain funds for his non-profit organisation called Clean Harbours Initiative. The film captures the bureaucratic quagmire of federal grants and funding. Meanwhile, Bath has a bank balance of $9.07. An inspiring documentary that is “not trying to solve the world’s problems”, as the film’s director says. “I’m trying to follow one guy who’s trying to do something in his own backyard. If we can get everybody doing a little, everybody contributing a little, then we could make a major change to our oceans”.
