In 2019, the Brazilian government coordinated the largest and most risky expedition of the past decades into the Amazon rainforest to search for a group of indigenous people living in isolation. The goal was to ensure that the inevitable first contact with non-indigenous people would take place in a controlled setting. Bruno Pereira, who was later murdered in the same region and became an international symbol in support of the indigenous people and the forest, led the expedition. (Clara Winter)
