As members of a profession with a certain amount of job security, morticians skillfully blend science, art and social work. From first encounters with a corpse to perusing casket catalogues, a wide range of those who handle life’s final arrangements talk openly about their vocations with candour, compassion and a healthy dose of humour. As one funeral director keenly observes: “Death is a fact of life. When you’re born, it＇s the only guarantee. They say ‘death and taxes.’ But some avoid paying taxes.” Balancing the solemn nature of the subject with much-needed levity, an embalmer discusses the details of their trade while we see a hearse getting its fluids changed.
