Pushy expats in conflict with each other and their environment in an at times hilarious social-anthropological experiment at a sunny, historical paradise in Egypt.

Malin Skjöld broke through big time with Plötsligt i Vinslöv (“Suddenly in Vinslöv”), directed together with Jenny Bergman, which has become a cult film since its release in 2001. Now she turns the camera towards a little parallel society in Luxor. We meet a group of Westerners who for different reasons found their way there – the archaeological remains, the mythological environments, the cheap housing, or the warm weather. They come from different class backgrounds and would never have met each other at home. In their voluntary exile, they live the good life while also pining for what Europe has to offer, and in their little bubble, they aggrandize themselves and do not mince their words when it comes to others. Welcome to Luxor is a feverish portrait of modern colonialism, filled with sharp, satirical humor in the borderland between art and documentary.
