The authoritarian power held by the military and a mass adulation of the monarchy in Thailand has led to a spark in populist nationalism. With a dearth of dis-sensual voices within this climate of fear, Homogeneous Empty Time is a bold and timely work that measures just how deep these mechanisms of control run within collective conscience.

Drawing from Benedict Anderson’s application of Walter Benjamin’s concept where the film finds its title, the documentary considers the synchronicity of popular beliefs and experiences articulated within institutions and social circles. It accumulates into a picture of mass manipulation held by a complex web of ideological maneuvers. But within, it bears witness to the simplest modes of resistance – within the spontaneous irrelevance of youth and the trans-figurative power of a protest ballad sung in exile.
