HeatonmadeherfirstBroadwayappearanceinthechorusofDon'tGetGodStarted(1987),afterwhichsheandfellowstudentscreatedStageThree,anOff-Broadwayactingtroupe.

WhenStageThreebroughtoneoftheirproductionstoLosAngeles,HeatoncaughttheeyeofacastingdirectorfortheABCdramaThirtysomething.Shewascastasanoncologist,leadingtosixappearancesontheseriesfrom1989to1991.OtherTVguestappearancesinclude:AlienNation(1989),Matlock(1990),PartyofFive(1996),TheKingofQueens(1999),andDannyPhantom(2004).

Heaton'sfeaturefilmsincludeMemoirsofanInvisibleMan(1992),Beethoven(1992),TheNewAge(1994),andSpaceJam(1996).

Heatonwasfeaturedinthreeshort-livedsitcoms—RoomforTwo,SomeoneLikeMeandWomenoftheHouse—beforelandingtheroleofDebraBaroneonEverybodyLovesRaymond.Shewasnominatedineachoftheseries'lastsevenseasonsforthePrimetimeEmmyAwardforOutstandingLeadActressinaComedySeries,winningin2000and2001.Withherwinin2000,shebecamethefirstofthecastmembersontheshowtowinanEmmy.ShehasalsocollectedtwoViewersforQualityTelevisionAwardsandaScreenActorsGuildtrophyforherworkontheseries.

HeatonappearedontheseasonsevenofExtremeMakeover:HomeEditionwhereshehelpedbuildahomeforafirefighterandhisfamily.

Heatonwastheproducerforthe2005documentaryTheBituminousCoalQueensofPennsylvania,whichwasdirectedbyherhusband.ShewasalsooneoftheproducersoftheWilliamWilberforcedramaAmazingGrace(2006).

InJanuary2007,Heatonreturnedtothestagetoco-starwithTonyShalhoubintheOff-BroadwayplayTheSceneatSecondStageTheatreinNewYorkCity.Forthisperformance,HeatonwasnominatedintheOutstandingLeadActresscategoryforthe22ndLucilleLortelAwards.

SinceSeptember2009,shehasstarredintheABCcomedyTheMiddle.
