DavidPeterRenwick(born4September1951)isanEnglishtelevisionwriter,bestknownforcreationofthesitcomOneFootintheGrave(1990)andthemysteryseriesJonathanCreek(1997).

Beforebeginninghisfull-timecomedywritingcareer,heworkedasajournalistonhishometownnewspaper,theLutonNews.

Onbeginninghiscomedycareer,heinitiallyworkedinateamwithwritingpartnerAndrewMarshall,thepairofthemprovidingmaterialtopopularsketchshowssuchasTheTwoRonnies(1971)andNottheNineO'ClockNews(1979)duringthelate1970sandearly'80s.OneofthemostcelebratedsketcheshewrotefortheformerwasaparodyoftheBBCquizprogrammeMastermind,wherea"CharlieSmithers"chosetoanswerquestionsonthespecialistsubject"Answeringthequestionbeforelast",adaptedfromhis"Answeringonequestionbehindallthetime"sketchfromtheirTheBurkissWayforBBCRadio4.Theirshort-livedLWTseriesforITV,EndofPartOne,wasanattempttotransferBurkiss-stylehumourtotelevision.Laterinthe1980stheyalsowroteforthesketchshowAlexeiSayle'sStuffandSpikeMilligan'sThere'saLotofItAbout.

In1982theypennedthecomedydramaserialWhoopsApocalypseforLWT,basedontheinsanityofinternationalpoliticsintheageofnuclearweapons,andfouryearslatertheyadaptedthescreenplay(changingmostofthecharactersandsituationscompletely)intoafeaturefilmversion.In1983theywroteTheSteamVideoCompanyforThamesTelevision,ashortcomedyseriesbasedonverysillyparodiesoffamousnovels.Thiswasfollowedin1986byHotMetal(1986)forLWT,asix-partsatireofthetabloidnewspaperindustrystarringRobertHardy,GeoffreyPalmerandJohnGordonSinclair.Theshowwasacriticalsuccessandreturnedforafurthersixepisodesin1988witharevisedcastofRobertHardy,RichardWilsonandCarolineMilmoe.

Renwickbeganwritingsoloin1990whenhecreatedthesitcomOneFootintheGrave(1990),starringRichardWilson,whichwashighlysuccessfulandwentontobeapopularhitforthefollowingdecade.ItalsoranforfourseasonsasanAmericanremaketitledCosby,starring比尔·考斯比,althoughthisisgenerallyregardedasaverylooseadaptationoftheoriginal.

In1994RenwickmarriedhisfiancéeEleanorHogarth.

In1997,Renwickdevisedthecomedy-dramaJonathanCreek(1997),basedaroundthecrime-solvingabilitiesoftheeponymousdesignerofmagictricks,playedbycomedianAlanDavies.Asof2016,thirty-twoepisodeshavebeenproducedacrossfiveshort-runseriesandfivespecials.TheslowrateofproductionispartlyduetoRenwick'swritingoftheepisodes,whichhedescribesasbeingapainstakingprocessinwhichtheintricaciesoftheplotstakeseveralmonthstoworkout.

Hehasalsowrittenfor'straight'televisiondrama,contributingepisodestoITV'sfamousadaptationsofAgathaChristie'sHerculePoirotmysteries,starringDavidSuchet.Renwick'sfondnessforrationalistmurdermysterieswithsupernaturalovertones,laterdevelopedfullyinJonathanCreekisevidentinelementsheaddedtothePoirotadaptations.In1992,Renwickandco-writerMichaelBakerreceivedanEdgarAwardfromtheMysteryWritersofAmericaforthePoirotepisode"TheLostMine",whichairedintheU.S.aspartofthePBSanthologyseriesMystery!.

Anothercomedy-dramaRenwickhaspennedisentitledLoveSoup(2005),starring塔姆辛·格雷格and迈克尔·兰德斯,premieredonBBCOneon27September2005.Renwick,andhisexwritingpartnerMarshall,hadcameorolesinanepisodeoftheseriesasmembersofatelevisionsitcomscriptwritingteam.OwenBrenmanalsofeaturedthroughoutmuchoftheseriesaswellasDoreenMantlewhoappearedinoneepisode,bothactorwithwho大卫·伦维克hadworkedwithbeforeinOneFootintheGrave(1990).
